Under Ember .... Something Lost, Nothing Found

Doon Harrow
Chapter 3 in The City of Ember talks about Doon ariving at the Pipeworks with anticipation. Airlin, the Pipeworks director's assistant guides Doon around his work site. She shows him around and they find Tunnel 97 where they set to work. To get to Tunnel 97, they had to follow a complicated route via passageways along pipes that carried water to all the buildings of Ember. During their lunch break, Airlin goes off to meet some friends and Doon finds his way back to the main tunnel using his map, determined to find something interesting or a slight clue to help save Ember but to no avail. He gets home angrily and hurls a shoe heel with all high might and accidentally hits his father. His father ecnourages him and tells him that he can find lots of bugs at the tunnel as Doon has always been fond of bugs.

Lina Mayfleet
In Chapter 4, Granny frantically searches for something which she feels has been lost but she does not exactly know what has been lost and what is it that she is looking for. Lina gets worried about this unusual behaviour of Granny latetly and she worries that Granny may not be able to look after her younger sister Poppy. Therefore, she heads down to Mrs. Murdo, her neighbour, and asks if she could keep an eye on Granny and Mrs. Murdo promises that she will. Lina takes a message to Clary given by Arbin Swinn to add four extra crates to his order, two of potatoes and two of cabbages. Clary and Lina have a small chat on how it is not possible to add extra potatoes to Arbin's orders as there happens to be a new disease which causes infections to the potatoes. Just as Lina is about to leave, she hears a wail followed by loud sobs. Sadge Merrall, a clerk in the Supply Depot pants and fearfully tells them what he sees in the darkness. Two gaurds come over to take him away. Lina tells Clary that she imagines about another City where everything is bright. Clary listens thoughtfully and says she has to get back to work and hands a few beans to Lina for her to grow them. Lina departs thanking her.

Welcome to the City of Ember

The City of Ember
In the underground city of Ember, young Lina and Doon struggle with clues in order to reveal both the history of their city and a way to save the population before their source of light dwindles away to nothing. Jeanne DuPrau presents a colorless society with a bleak future in The City of Ember. The citizens of Ember live underground where they face daily blackouts, food shortages, and corrupt politicians. With the source of light waning, two young citizens take it upon themselves to unlock the secret to Ember’s mysterious past. Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow navigate this post-apocalyptic world in an attempt to decode a cryptic message that may save them all. Our Essential Questions for this novel are: A. What is the basis for all war conflict? B. If you could imagine a world where technology and abundant resources no longer exist, what would be the results of life as we know it? The City of Ember introduces us to a way of life unfamiliar to what we are accustomed to on an everyday basis. So, to get things started, your assignment is to create a written description of an underground city. You will use sensory (sight, sounds, smells, texture) details to explain what your underground city is like including, the culture (way of life); cuisine (foods that are available); specific things your citizens must do to survive underground; what your citizens do for entertainment and the basic structure of your city. An optional map can be included to provide a visual construction of your underground dwelling but is not mandatory. Can't wait to "dive" into this book with you!

Chapter 22: The Prophecy Comes True

Ok, this is it, the final chapter or is it really the beginning to an exciting new adventure? I hope you have enjoyed our novel study, even though it took longer than expected. Well, here is the final blogging activity for the actual reading. There will be a follow up activity that we will complete as a project. Make sure you leave a comment regarding your thoughts about the entire book and if you are planning to read the rest of the series. (I know Jonathan...you already have.)

Warm-up Activities:
    1. Journal questions for anticipatory discussion:
a.     Have you ever betrayed or let down by a friend? Is that person still your friend? If so, how did you make up?
b.     If someone knew something really bad that was going to happen in your life, and there was nothing you could do about it, would you rather have them tell you or keep it a secret? Why?

Here is the Audio
I had to divide the chapter in half due to the file size.

Part 1

Part 2

As You Read:

  1. What’s the tradition for campers who return from quests? How did the Ares cabin “honor” Percy?
  2. How does Percy’s mom get enough money to go to college?
  3. What happens to Grover in this chapter? Speculate: Will he come back in another book?
  4. What is the bead for Percy’s first summer?
  5. Why do you think Percy has so much trouble deciding whether to stay year round or go to seventh grade? What would you choose?
  6. What is unique about Backbiter, Luke’s new sword?
  7. Why is it dangerous to litter at Camp Half-Blood?
  8. Luke says, “Western Civilization is a disease.” What do you think he means by that?
  9. What turned Luke so bitter?
  10. How did Annabeth take Percy’s advice?

Follow-up Activities: (Choose one and this is a separate post)

  1. Wanted Poster. Now that we know Luke is the betrayer at Camp Half-Blood, design a wanted poster that can be posted around Mount Olympus. You will need to draw a picture of Luke, perhaps in the form of a mug shot. You will also need to include a physical description, a list of the crimes he is wanted for, the location where he was last scene, any special powers or weapons people should look out for, and a reward, if you want to offer one. This should be done using Pages on your MacBook. You will need to save your poster on your desktop and email to me so that I can create an e-zine of everyone's poster. (Like the Patriot/Loyalist activity)

  1. Percy’s choice. Write a paragraph defending or attacking Percy’s choice to leave Camp Half-Blood for the school year. Is it wise? Why or why not?

b.     Have you ever had the desire to get back at someone? What did they do to you that made you feel this way? Did you in fact take revenge?
    1. Journal: Prediction. What do you think will happen when Percy brings the lightning bolt to Zeus? If you were writing the next scene, what would it be like?

Chapter 10: I Ruin A Perfectly Good Busz - LT #12

Before you get started on answering questions about Percy's quest, let's stop for a moment and do some writing. Create a blog entry for both, yes I said both writing prompts.

1. Many of the campers at Camp Half-Blood have their own magic item. Clarisse has an electric spear. Annabeth has a baseball cap that turns her invisible. What magic item would make sense for Percy, as the son of the Sea God? Design your own magic item.

2. Percy gets to try his hand at driving a bus in this chapter. Defend or attack this proposition: “The national driving age should be lowered to 13.” Can you think of any reasons that might actually convince Congress to pass such a law?

Remember these are short responses, but be clear and visual, remembering your audience as you write. Please put both response in one (1) post. Title your post: Chapter 10 Writing Prompt

Next, answer the following questions as we read. Go ahead and copy and paste the questions into your blog, but make sure you use a new post and not the entry with for the writing post. Please keep them separate. Here are the questions:

1. Who is Argus and why can he never be surprised?
2. What gift does Luke give to Percy? Why can’t Percy use them?
3. What special properties does Riptide have?
4. What is Mist?

Follow-up Activities

After answering the questions from chapter 10, let's try these activities to bring some connection to what Percy and crew are going through.

1. Draw your own Fury. The pictures below are how ancient greeks viewed the furies. Take a look and then draw your own updated version. Use a plain white sheet of paper, apply color and scan to your flash drive. Then upload your picture on your blog post.

2. Olympian Travel Agency. Percy Jackson has ten days to from New York to Los Angeles and back again, and he can’t use air travel. Is this possible? Try to use internet sources to “book” and trip for Percy and his friends using buses or trains. How much would the trip cost? How long would it take? Try these sources to start:

www.amtrak.com (for trains)
www.greyhound.com (for busses)

This assignment will be another separate post. Title your post: After Reading Chapter 10

Each group should read the article -- either silently (writing main ideas) or aloud (going around the circle, alternating paragraphs). You may take notes, either way. At the end of the reading, you will be responsible for telling the story to someone who has not read it, and you may not refer to the story, although you may refer to your notes. After each group has finished, you will be re-divided into trios, with one member from each of the three story groups. You will then take turns reporting your version of the story to the new team members. As one person tells the story, another student acts as scribe, and writes down main facts. The goal is to be the trio that comes up with the longest list of facts about Hermes. Obviously, some facts will overlap between versions, but each fact can only be listed once. Give a minimum -- perhaps ten facts. I would be really impressed if anybody gets twenty. A prize will be awarded for the trio that produces the most thorough list. This activity will be timed. At the end, you should know a lot about Hermes.

Part 3
As you read:
1. What does Percy noticed about the farm house as he walks away from it? What bothers him about the attic?
2. Why does Percy feel guilty about Grover getting in trouble?
3. Why do you think Percy asks Chiron about the Underworld? He says: "The beginnings of an idea – a tiny, hopeful fire – started forming in my mind." What does he mean?
4. Based on the description, what Greek god is cabin three dedicated to?
5. Why is Annabeth upset with Percy after they leave Cabin Eleven?
6. How does Annabeth know that Percy is "one of us"?
7. Percy says the big girl from the Ares cabin reminds him of Nancy Bobofit. Is Clarisse like Nancy? Why or why not?
8. Why doesn't Percy want Annabeth's help when he gets into the fight with Clarisse?
9. What happens to Clarisse and her friends in the bathroom?
10. How does this incident change Annabeth's attitude toward Percy?

Part 4 (Done as a class)

The 12 Olympian Gods + 2. This is a good point in the book to nail down the facts about the Olympian gods. Use the graphic organizer in your Google Docs to fill out information regarding the sphere of control and symbols belonging to the god and goddesses referred to in our novel. We will fill most of it out as a class in our various groups. I will provide much of the information, but you will be able to provide your own knowledge as we go along. This makes a fun and easy “quick reference” sheet for review. (Click on the word Google Docs to go the correct page)

I'm Related To Who.... LT #2

So, The Lightning Thief talks about Greek Mythology so we will discuss some of the mythical gods associated with the history. However, some of the gods frequently had children with mortals. What if you were the child of a god or goddess? Well that would be interesting... So, Research which god or goddess you would most likely be related to. For ideas,
visit the web site

http://www.mythweb.com
Create a blog entry that list three (3) possible choices of who your god or goddess parent might be and explain why you feel you are related to them.

This does not have to be a long post, just make sure you become familiar with at least three (3) of the gods or goddesses we will cover in our novel study.

Title your post: I'm Related To...

Start your post with a brief introduction such as: While studying Greek Mythology I found out that I may be related to at least 3 gods and goddesses.

The Lightning Thief Introduction

Welcome to my The Lightning Thief Blog. Here we will engage in an inquiry and discussion lesson covering the novel by Rick Riordan. This blog will be your hub for all assignments and discussion board questions. Please make sure you follow this blog to have the rss feeds come directly into your dashboard.

So, let's get started with an introductory activity:

Create your first post by responding to 4 of the 7 following prompts. Choose any 4 you like but only make one entry to answer all 4 questions. Make sure that you retype the question prior to answering; include the question number and then make sure there is a space between the question and your response.

Title your post: The Lightning Thief Introduction

Here are the questions:

1. Have you ever been treated unfairly by a teacher (or parent, or other adult)?

Describe the circumstances and why you considered the treatment unfair.

2. What do you know about learning disabilities such as ADHD or dyslexia? Do you

know anyone who has a learning disability? Do you think a person with a learning

disability should receive more time to complete tests or less homework than a

person without a learning disability? Explain your position.

3. In Ancient times, the Greeks had gods for many important forces in their lives --

the sea, thunderstorms, farming, music, medicine, poetry, archery, etc. Why do

you think they imagined many different gods rather than just one? Would this

make life more confusing or less confusing?

4. Young children often imagine that their parents aren’t really their parents. What

would it be like if you suddenly found out that you had a “real” father or mother

you never knew about? What if this person was extremely rich and powerful –

would you accept them as a parent?

5. Do you believe in anything that science can’t prove -- such as magic, or ghosts, or

creatures like the Loch Ness monster? Why or why not?

6. Have you ever been to summer camp? If so, describe what you did or did not like

about it. If not, imagine and describe what you think a typical summer camp

would be like – any impressions from television or movies?

7. You have been granted one magical item of your choice. What would this item be,

and what power would it have? Explain your choice.
